Joanna Magner Candidate Questionnaire

Nominated For: Internal Organizer

What is your organizing experience? What is your plan for growing power in 2019 should you be elected to your position?

I have been a Seattle DSA member since January 2017. During the past 2 years, I have served as a delegate to the 2017 DSA National Convention, as a member of the Community Service Committee, and was as a member of the Rules and Bylaws Committee during the lead-up to the 2018 Local Convention, and was heavily involved in organizing the 2018 Local Convention. My most recent organizing experience has been helping to develop the Seattle Socialist Night School, and I have co-lead Night School discussion sessions since October of 2018. I am committed to the long-term project of building class consciousness and fighting for a brighter future, and I have joined together with several members who share a common political vision to form Solidarity 2019.

Why are you running? What do you want to accomplish, create, or change should you be elected?

Seattle DSA is one of the largest DSA chapters in the nation, and we will likely see membership continue to grow locally and nationally in the lead-up to the 2020 elections. In order to effectively fight for the future we seek to create, we must be prepared to welcome these new members and plan for dealing with the challenges of a growing organization. Building a strong political foundation is a vital component of this work. Political education efforts will empower membership to be comfortable talking about politics, to be better at analyzing political ideas, and to understand the political implications of arguments that we encounter within “the discourse” on the left and in the world at large. This work will strengthen our chapter, allow us to have comradely debates between perspectives and about political strategies, and will help us to do more effective work locally to improve our communities.

If elected, the primary areas where I will focus my efforts are political education and strengthening internal democracy. I will continue to be involved in the Socialist Night School, and to help create a welcoming environment where comradely debate on political topics and strategies can flourish. I will help organize and promote debate and discussion among membership in the run-up to the 2019 National Convention. Those are just a few examples, and a more detailed list can be found at
