SUMMARY:Queer & Feminist Working Class History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Join the Queer and Feminist Caucus for our monthly Working Class History Happy Hour\, featuring working class struggles led by women and queer people throughout history. \nAfter a grueling election\, this month we’ll focus on the inspiring story of Eugene Debs and the Socialist Party who ran for president in the early 1900s\, showing that building working class power\, based in workplaces and on anti-racism and independent of the Democratic Party was entirely possible — even when organized socialists were a minority in society. \nWe’ll also have some time to debrief the 2020 elections\, what happened and what we do next. \nThis is an online meeting. RSVP here. \nJoin us on the Queer & Feminist Slack channel if you have ideas\, would like to help organize\, or have any questions! Coming up in future months: the General Strike of Enslaved People & the Civil War\, the Strike of 100\,000 in New York City\, & more!

SUMMARY:Queer & Feminist Happy Hour: The Paris Commune
DESCRIPTION:This month we learn and talk about the Paris Commune: the first time in history that working class people took power! \nIn 1871\, workers in Paris organized themselves\, took political and economic power from the capitalists\, and ran the city in their interests for two whole months. One of the first experiments in working class democracy\, the workers set up their own government\, limiting the salary of any employee of the Commune to a typical workers’ wage. \nThe Paris Commune was so important to socialists and revolutionaries of the time that Marx and Engels even revised part of the Communist Manifesto based on the lessons of the commune. What lessons did socialists and revolutionaries take from the commune after its defeat? What lessons does this history have for us today? And what role did women play in the creation and defense of the Commune? \nJoin the Queer and Feminist Caucus for our monthly Working Class History Happy Hour\, featuring working class struggles led by women and queer people throughout history. \nThis is an online meeting. RSVP here to get the Zoom link! \nJoin us on the Queer & Feminist Slack channel if you have ideas\, would like to help organize\, or have any questions! Coming up in future months: the General Strike of Enslaved People & the Civil War & more!

SUMMARY:Queer & Feminist Caucus: Working Class History Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:This month we learn and talk about the first trade unions for women in the US\, the Lowell Mill Girls\, and the fight for the 10-hour day in the 1840s and 1850s! Ever wondered what early US working class struggles against industrialization were like? How the first trade unions came about? What lessons that period of history has for socialists today? \nJoin the Queer and Feminist Caucus for our monthly Working Class History Happy Hour\, featuring working class struggles led by women and queer people throughout history. \nThis is an online meeting. SUMMARY:Queer & Feminist Caucus: Postal Workers' Strike of 1970
DESCRIPTION:Join the Queer and Feminist Caucus for our every-three-weeks Labor & Revolutionary History Happy Hour\, featuring working class struggles led by women and queer people throughout history. This week we’re taking a quick detour from our timeline (don’t worry\, we’ll be back in the 1830s after this!) with a discussion on the Postal Workers’ strike of 1970 and the lessons it holds for today! \nThis week we’ll learn about the Postal Workers’ Strike of 1970\, an 8-day wildcat strike that transformed the post office into what it is today\, and won a living wage and better working conditions. \nRSVP here! \nJoin us on the Queer & Feminist Slack channel if you have ideas\, would like to help organize\, or have any questions!

SUMMARY:Queer and Feminist Reading Group: October Song
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we read Chapter 5 of Paul LeBlanc’s account of the Russian Revolution\, October Song. What lessons can the Russian Revolution give to us today? What actually happened before and after the working class took power? How do conditions in society dictate our strategies and tactics? How would we\, in a modern context\, wrest power from the ruling class? \nThis week\, we’ll be discussing Chapter 5 (“Global Context”) and the importance of internationalism for socialist revolutionaries. What was the global context that the fledgling Soviet Republic\, immediately after the revolution\, had to grapple with? What working class struggles were going on elsewhere in the world? What were the Communist Internationals? \nAll are welcome to join for lively discussion and comradely community. This reading group meets every two weeks. If you haven’t been to one of our previous discussions\, that’s OK! We’d love to have you. Email sdsaqueerandfeminist@gmail.com to get a copy of the reading. \nWe’ll meet over Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/932925026 or call (669) 900-6833\, meeting ID: 932 925 026#

SUMMARY:Remember Rosie Jimenez: Rally for Reproductive Justice
DESCRIPTION:In 1977\, Rosie Jimenez\, a Latinx college student and single mother\, was the first known person to die after the Hyde Amendment banned federal funds from covering Medicaid abortions. This effectively cut millions of low-income people off from safe access to reproductive healthcare. She felt she had no choice but to seek out a cheap and dangerous procedure. Tragically\, the current assaults on reproductive justice mean that many people\, especially women of color\, will face a similar dilemma. \nWe will be meeting on the anniversary of Rosie’s death from an unsafe abortion. Join us in Westlake Park from 5 – 7PM on Thursday\, October 3rd\, to bring home the need for a strong movement that demands “Our bodies! Our choice!” regardless of race\, immigration status\, age\, or gender identification. \nThe Rosie Jimenez Day Rally is co-sponsored by Gender Justice League\, Radical Women\, Red Union\, Seattle Clinic Defense\, Seattle DSA Queer and Feminist Caucus\, and Sex Workers Outreach Project – Seattle. \nEndorsers: ANSWER Coalition\, Community & Labor Against Fascism\, Freedom Socialist Party\, Juan Bocanegra\, Organized Workers for Labor Solidarity\, Party for Socialism and Liberation\, Rosie’s Machinists 751\, Seattle Democratic Socialists of America\, Seattle Gay News\, Seattle Revolutionary Socialists\, Seattle Women’s Commission. \nHelp support this effort by DONATING at http://bit.ly/rosiejimenezdonate \nFor press inquiries\, accommodations\, comments\, questions\, or to add your organization’s endorsement\, please email rwseattle@mindspring.com or call 206-722-6057.

SUMMARY:SDSA Queer & Feminist Caucus presents: How to Survive a Plague
DESCRIPTION:Seattle DSA is proud to present a screening of How to Survive A Plague in partnership with the Northwest Film Forum this Sunday\, October 28th at 7:30pm! This film is being screened 2 months earlier than anticipated in part due to the brutal and cruel attacks that our non-binary friends are facing from the White House and DOJ. Government sanctioned attacks on some of the most marginalized members of our community are nothing new\, as highlighted in the film. We hope to provide some solidarity to the trans and queer community\, and a glimpse into how the AIDS community organized and fought back. We look forward to seeing you there! \nTickets will be $12 and donations are encouraged; we are currently seeking to partner with a local gender and/or queer rights/justice oriented organization for the proceeds to go to\, and to co-host if there is interest. \nIn the dark days of 1987\, America was six years into the AIDS epidemic\, a crisis that was still largely being ignored both by government officials and health organizations — until the sudden emergence of the activist group ACT UP in Greenwich Village\, New York\, largely made up of HIV-positive participants who refused to die without a fight. Along with TAG (Treatment Action Group)\, and emboldened by the power of rebellion\, they took on the challenges that public officials had ignored\, raising awareness of the disease through a series of dramatic protests. More remarkably\, they became recognized experts in virology\, biology\, and pharmaceutical chemistry. How to Survive a Plague is a 2012 American documentary that follows these activists and organizers in the face of enormous obstacles and government-sponsored genocide.
