SUMMARY:Suspend the Rent! COVID19 Organizing in District 3 & Nationalize Amazon\, Boeing\, Delta and other bailed-out big biz? Next D3 ZOOM Mtg
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members for a Zoom/phone meeting this THURSDAY to discuss the excellent petition/letter campaign by several DSA members that demands Gov. Inslee decree a rent suspension and how we can build that pressure campaign in District 3.  \nAs well as discuss the demand of taking into public democratic ownership corporations like American Airlines\, Boeing\, Comcast and other corporations that get bailed out in the $2.2 trillion economic rescue bill. \nWhat does it mean\, “take into public democratic ownership” or “nationalize” corporations? Why would we need to do that\, couldn’t we just pass stringent regulations instead\, similar to what Bernie calls for?  Who can fight and win against the power of the corporations?\n\nhttps://zoom.us/j/631822283 \nMeeting ID: 631 822 283 \nOne tap mobile\n+16699009128 (San Jose)\n+13462487799 (Houston)

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: A 2nd Great Depression? Worse? & Suspend the Rent! COVID19 D3 Organizing Next District 3 mtg
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members to discuss… \nCOVID19 has unleashed a global economic and social catastrophe\, the devastating impact of which will be disproportionately borne by working people.  This comes on the backs of four decades of neoliberalism which meted out savage cuts to working people’s living standards to the point that 12% of the US population is in poverty (a family of 4 making $24\,000 a year)\, 40 million are without healthcare coverage\, and 40% of workers couldn’t absorb an unexpected bill of $400. \nAs COVID19 tightens its grip on society\, global stock markets have collapsed by 30%. Unemployment is soaring\, 10 million in the last 2 weeks\, and threatens to crest double digits\, as high as 20% according to Goldman Sachs. This will disproportionately impact women and people of color who make up the majority of low wage\, no benefits jobs\, and who are least likely to have paid sick leave. We don’t know what the full impact will be but what we do know is\, like the last crisis\, this will come down to who pays for the crisis\, working people or big business. \nHow did we get here? Are we headed towards a second Great Depression? We know that capitalism is to blame\, but how exactly?  What is capitalism? How are profits made? Who are the ruling class? And the working class? What’s the role of the state in all this? And how would socialism be any different? \nWe’ll also be discussing next steps in the Suspend the Rent! Campaign to pressure Gov. Inslee to decree and rent suspension/forgiveness. \nhttps://zoom.us/j/238193960 \nMeeting ID: 238 193 960 \n+16699009128 (San Jose) \n

SUMMARY:Suspend the Rent! Phone Zap
DESCRIPTION:We need to suspend rents now! The covid-19 situation becomes both a housing crisis and a health crisis. Join us in phone zapping the Governor’s phonelines until he takes action on our demands. \nWhat do we mean by phone zap? We will be calling in to the Governor’s office in shifts. If we get through to somebody\, we will tell them our demands: suspend rents\, cancel late fees\, and use vacant property to house people experiencing homelessness. If we don’t get through\, we keep calling. We will do this in shifts throughout the day on Friday\, April 10th. \nThis makes it different from the typical advocacy\, in that it will put pressure on the Governor\, and force him to acknowledge our demands. \nWe invite you to join Seattle DSA\, Tacoma DSA\, Spokane DSA\, and SnoCo DSA\, and sign up for a shift making calls on FRIDAY\, APRIL 10th. Training and a sample script will be provided.

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the brand new Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich. Rosa Luxemburg was an inspirational revolutionary leader\, socialist theoretician\, and tireless fighter for the working class right up until the moment when she was tragically murdered during the German Revolution. \nWhile Lenin and the Russian socialists faced brutal oppression which left little room for reformist hopes\, in Germany the situation was far different. The Social-Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) included labor unionists\, social democrats\, democratic socialists\, revolutionaries of all stripes\, and many who hoped that socialism could be achieved through a peaceful and democratic path. \nThe situation was made immeasurably more complex by the collapse of the 2nd International at the onset of the first World War\, as well as the Russian Revolution which followed shortly. In this confusing situation\, the clarity of thought and the fighting spirit of Rosa Luxemberg were completely unmatched. She expanded Marxist theory with important works on imperialism and economics and fought ceaselessly for social revolution. Ultimately\, she was betrayed and murdered on orders from reformist leaders of the SPD during the failed German Revolution. \nPaul Frölich\, the author\, was a contemporary and comrade of Red Rosa. While many would have settled for a simple hagiography\, his work takes a serious look at Rosa Luxemberg’s politics and the thinking behind it. In a time where the socialist left is once again at a crossroads between the dual pull of reformist and revolutionary tendencies\, Frölich’s work raises essential questions on the nature of capitalism and the road to socialist transformation. \nIn her famous work Reform or Revolution\, Rosa Luxemburg concluded that “Between social reforms and revolution there exists for an inseparable connection. The struggle for reforms is its means; the social revolution\, its aim.” This group is hosted by Seattle DSA District 2. All socialists in any place are welcome to join. \nFirst Meeting:\nMonday\, 4/13/2020\n5:00 to 6:30 PST\nReading: Chapter 1 and 2 required\, Introduction and Preface optional but strongly recommended\nVideo and voice chat at: https://chat.seattledsa.org/LuxemburgStudy \nFuture Meetings:\nWeekly meetings on Mondays\, although day of week and time are adjustable based on what works for comrades interested.\nReading expectation is 30 to 60 pages per week based on participants \nWant to help organize the meetings? We are happy to share the work of planning\, promoting\, chairing\, writing and giving the five to ten minute introduction\, or coming up with discussion questions. We will help and offer feedback for any comrade who wants to share the load.

SUMMARY:Should DSA endorse Biden? & Are we heading for a 2nd Great Depression? (and Suspend the Rent! COVID19 Organizing) Next District 3 Mtg
DESCRIPTION:As COVID19 tightens its grip on society\, global stock markets have collapsed by 30%. Unemployment is soaring\, 16 million in the last 3 weeks\, and threatens to crest double digits\, as high as 20% according to Goldman Sachs.  \nWe don’t know what the full impact will be but what we do know is\, like the last crisis\, this will come down to who pays for the crisis\, working people or big business. \nShould DSA endorse Biden? Are we headed towards a second Great Depression? How did we get here? We know that capitalism is to blame\, but how exactly?  How are profits made? Who are the ruling class? And the working class? What’s the role of the state in all this? And how would socialism be any different?  \nWe’ll also be discussing next steps in the Suspend the Rent! Campaign to pressure Gov. Inslee to decree and rent suspension/forgiveness. \nhttps://zoom.us/j/238193960 \nMeeting ID: 238 193 960 \n+16699009128 (San Jose)

The first is the DSA strategy document https://www.dsausa.org/strategy/resistance_rising_socialist_strategy_in_the_age_of_political_revolution/. The second is “Where does power come from?” by Amelia Davenport in cosmonaut https://cosmonaut.blog/2018/09/03/where-does-power-come-from/. SUMMARY:Domestic Violence\, Household Work\, and Essential Work: Why COVID-19 is a Socialist Feminist Issue Next District 6 mtg
DESCRIPTION:COVID 19 has universally affected our neighbors and communities.  Even relatively well-off workers are suddenly coping with working from home and childcare\, while the most vulnerable now find themselves competing for ever scarcer resources. While we are all feeling the effects of this crisis\, some workers are disproportionately affected. \n\n\n\n\nFrontline and essential workers\, who are more likely to be women and people of color (working class jobs — healthcare\, sanitation\, grocery stores\, etc) \n\n\nPeople who were already unemployed\, self-employed\, working domestically under the table- will not be getting unemployment- and undocumented workers will not be getting a stimulous check. \n\n\nHomeless resources stretched past breaking point- shelters closing up to half of their bed space\, soup kitchens and food banks over-taxed: all issues linked to intersectionality/DV/poverty \n\n\n\n\nJoin us to discuss how COVID-19 has further exposed the injustices of Capitalism and the Socialist demands that we can build towards in DSA \nhttps://zoom.us/j/96185383614\n \nMeeting ID: 961 8538 3614\n+16699009128 (San Jose)

SUMMARY:Suspend the Rent! PhoneZap 2
If we get through to somebody\, we will tell them our demands: suspend rents\, increase tenant protections\, and use vacant property to house people experiencing homelessness. If we don’t get through\, we keep calling. We will do this in shifts throughout the day on Monday\, April 20th\, and\, if our demands aren’t met\, Friday\, April 24th. \nThis makes it different from the typical advocacy\, in that it will put pressure on the Governor\, and force him to acknowledge our demands. \nWe invite you to join Seattle DSA\, Tacoma DSA\, Spokane DSA\, and SnoCo DSA\, Whatcom DSA\, Olympia DSA and many working people in making these calls. Training and a sample script will be provided.

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg Biography Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich. \nReading: Chapter 3 required \nMeet time: 5:00 to 6:30 PST \nhttps://zoom.us/j/94759328597 \nMeeting ID: 947 5932 8597 \nAgenda \n5:30 – 5:40 Introductions and current events \n5:40 – 5:50 Summary of the reading by our volunteers\n5:50 – 6:50 Main discussion \n6:50 – 7:00 Planning the next meeting \n  \nQuestions? email the organizer at robertclambertz@gmail.com \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:COVID19 Crisis: What is a Socialist Feminist View and Response? Next District 3
DESCRIPTION:Politicians like to say that we are all in this together\, that this crisis hits rich and poor alike\, and while we know this virus will strike any and all\, we also know that working people will face the brunt of the crisis and will be forced to pay for it long after its gone. We also know that within the working class\, women and people of color are and will continue to be disproportionately impacted.  From being on the frontlines as essential workers\, to the main caregiver to the family\, to experiencing spikes in domestic violence – women\, and in particular women of color\, are impacted by the crisis in a uniquely terrible way. \nJoin District 3 members to discuss\, how and why are women disproportionately impacted by the economic and social catastrophe of coronavirus?  Why are women oppressed under capitalism? What does this tell us about capitalism? How would socialism be different? What socialist feminist demands for COVID19 relief could DSA make?  \nWe’ll also discuss COVID19 Organizing in District 3\, Suspend the Rent! Campaign\, and District 3 tenant organizing. \nhttps://zoom.us/j/97427558223 \nMeeting ID: 974 2755 8223 \n+16699009128 (San Jose) \n**For security purposes we have set a password for the zoom call. SUMMARY:Teamster Rebellion: District 3 Reading Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members to discuss… \n“Teamster Rebellion” is the dynamic story of  one of the most important strikes in modern labor history\, from one of the main organizers. The Teamsters strike in Minneapolis in 1934 was an all out war between the workers and the entire ruling class\, their corporate media\, armed thugs\, and the police. The National Guard was even mobilized! And the union drive and strike was led by socialists! And the workers won! Their victory set the standard for militancy\, rank and file democracy\, and how socialists can effectively engage in the labor movement\, and more!  And the gains they won inspired other enormous gains for working people through struggle and\, not for nothing\, the contract they won set the standard for the next 70 years!  This struggle is rich with lessons for us now as we enter a period that will be inflamed with the potential to build the socialist movement! \nHere is the link to a PDF of the book: https://b-ok.cc/book/2226373/5d5e69 \nhttps://zoom.us/j/92961976501 \nMeeting ID: 929 6197 6501 \n+16699009128 (San Jose) \n**For security purposes we have set a password for the zoom call. SUMMARY:Renters Rising! From Tax Amazon\, Rent Strikes to D3 Tenant Organizing Next District 3 mtg
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 meeting to discuss…. \n“People are making a choice between rent and food\, and that’s not a choice they should have to make\,” \nAcross Seattle and beyond\, working people are facing this grim choice as they are being forced to bear the brunt of the economic calamity unleashed by the Covid-19 response. Meanwhile\, landlords are raising rents\, politicians are enriching themselves through insider trading\, and big corporations are benefitting from the bailout package. A critical question the economic crisis poses is: who is going to pay for this crisis\, working people or big business?   \nJoin District 3 members to discuss these campaigns and how we can build a movement to win concrete victories on rent and other badly needed reforms. We’ll also be continuing our discussion on organizing in District 3 and how we do that. \n** Please check the District 3 SDSA slack channel for Zoom info. Or text 402-915-1242. SUMMARY:Jacobin Reading Group: Bigger Than Bernie
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Jacobin Reading Group in which we discuss what it will take to advance the American socialist movement beyond the Bernie Sanders campaign. \nThe discussion will be framed around three chapters of Meagan Day and Micah Uetricht’s book\, Bigger Than Bernie. \nPlease read the following chapters prior to the event: \n\nChapter 4\, The Dirty Break. The Democratic Party is a barrier for socialist organizing\, but there are unique structural impediments to starting a mass workers’ party in the United States. How should this be navigated by the socialist movement?\nChapter 5\, Engines of Solidarity. Which reforms are worth fighting for?\nChapter 6\, Rank-and-File Revolution. How should socialists approach labor organizing?\n\n  \nThis will be a video chat event available at the following url: https://hangouts.google.com/call/X9AZyRVFFM5BZrc6kXXeAEEE?no_rd \n  \nBook link (please purchase if you have the ability\, though): https://drive.google.com/open?id=1RlOc3T5-jfc6qiqs-h02SFgbKkXg2L3e

If we agree the current state must be replaced\, what should replace it and how do we replace it? Do socialists support violent revolution? \nJoin District 5 members for a dynamic discussion group on the foundational reading “State and Revolution” by Lenin this coming SUNDAY at NOON.  We’ll be reading and discussing the Chapters 5-6. \nBring your thoughts\, ideas\, and questions!  Even if you don’t have time to read all of it (or any of it!)\, come anyway! \nState and Revolution: https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1917/staterev/ \n**For zoom info please check the SDSA District 5 Slack channel or text 402-915-1242.

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg Biography Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich. \nReading: Chapter 6 required \nMeet time: 5:30 to 7:00 PST \nhttps://zoom.us/j/94759328597 \nMeeting ID: 947 5932 8597 \nAgenda \n5:30 – 5:40 Introductions and current events \n5:40 – 5:50 Summary of the reading by our volunteers\n5:50 – 6:50 Main discussion \n6:50 – 7:00 Planning the next meeting \n  \nQuestions? email the organizer at robertclambertz@gmail.com \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Teamster Rebellion: District 3 Reading Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members to discus Chapters 4-7 of Teamster Rebellion. \n“Teamster Rebellion” is the dynamic story of  one of the most important strikes in modern labor history\, from one of the main organizers. \nHere is the link to a PDF of the book: https://b-ok.cc/book/2226373/5d5e69 \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87257288446

SUMMARY:Renters Rising! From Tax Amazon to Rent Suspension Next District 5 Mtg
DESCRIPTION:“People are making a choice between rent and food\, and that’s not a choice they should have to make\,” \nAcross Seattle and beyond\, working people are facing this grim choice as they are being forced to bear the brunt of the economic calamity unleashed by the Covid-19 response. Meanwhile\, Jeff Bezos’ wealth increased by $15 billion in April\, landlords are raising rents\, politicians are enriching themselves through insider trading\, and big corporations are benefitting from the bailout package. A critical question the economic crisis poses is: who is going to pay for this crisis\, working people or big business?   \nRight now Seattle DSA\, under the banner Green New Homes\, is actively involved in the Tax Amazon coalition and movement and is currently preparing to ramp up petition signature gathering to get Tax Amazon on the ballot in November. \nJust yesterday the majority of the Seattle City Council\, led by Counncilmembers Herbold\, Mosqueda\, and Gonzalez essentiallY killed the Tax Amazon legislation by Sawant and Morales that would have taxed Amazon and other big corporations to help struggling working people pay rent and other vital life expenses. \nSo it’s critical we do our part to get the 30\,000 signatures needed to get Tax Amazon on the ballot. \nJoin District 5 members to discuss this development in the Tax Amazon campaign and how we can help build the movement needed to win.\n \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81047149675 \nMeeting ID: 810 4714 9675 \n+12532158782 (Tacoma) \n

SUMMARY:Tax Amazon for Green New Homes Committee Emergency Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Since January\, the Tax Amazon coalition has been fighting for Seattle to pass a tax on the 800 richest corporations to provide immediate financial aid to the 100\,000 Seattleites most in need and to fund the construction of union-built green housing and home retrofitting. On Thursday though\, three Democrat Seattle City Councilmembers shelved the bill the Tax Amazon coalition has been fighting for. The Council’s decision is a wake-up call that we need to ramp up pressure on them by preparing to take this matter directly to the voters — and we need all SDSA members’ help to go all out to collect the required signatures by July 1st. \nJoin the Seattle DSA Tax Amazon/Green New Homes Committee Saturday\, May 9\, to discuss what these recent events mean for our movement and strategize together how we move forward. Winning a big business tax for green housing is not only vital for Seattle’s working class\, but is an important step toward winning a Green New Deal. This is how we build our power\, get organized\, and raise expectations! \nWe’ve sent out the ballot petition to all of our Seattle DSA members. On Saturday\, after discussing this week’s events\, we will text and phone bank our members to make sure they received the ballot petition and ask them to sign on and share with their family and friends. Please read Seattle DSA’s press statement\, which we just sent to the media\, for more details and join us on Saturday! \nCome to our emergency committee meeting to: \n\nDiscuss the City Council’s hypocritical shelving of the Tax Amazon legislation and strategize how we build our pressure and take matters directly to the voters.\nPrepare for upcoming events\, like the action conference on May 16.\nText and phone bank Seattle DSA members to make sure they send in their ballot petition and share it with family and friends.\nDiscuss other creative ideas for collecting signatures and building this campaign\n\nZoom link can be found on the Tax Amazon channel on Seattle DSA slack if you are a member\, or by registering here.

SUMMARY:Queer and Feminist Labor Happy Hour: The Pawtucket Mill Strike of 1824
DESCRIPTION:Looking for community and inspiration during COVID-19? Join the Queer & Feminist caucus for our Zoom happy hours and discussions on labor history. We want to explore the rich history of women and queer folks in the US labor movement together!  \nRSVP here and we’ll send you the link!  \nThis week we’ll learn about the Pawtucket Mill Strike in Pawtucket\, Rhode Island. It was the first textile strike in the US\, and was primarily organized by women. We’ll learn from and about our comrades who fought for us\, drawing lessons for the organizing opportunities that present themselves in the time of COVID-19 and beyond.  \nOptional reading here! \nEach week we’ll discuss a different historical event\, through the eyes of those on the ground (when material is available). Don’t worry\, readings will be short\, interesting\, and optional — or sometimes in the form of movies or music! We’ll follow the labor movement in chronological order\, because we think this gives us a fuller view of the changing conditions in US society. Feel free to pop-in for one or another\, but we encourage you to come as much as you can\, and create this (for now\, virtual) community with us.

SUMMARY:GREEN NEW HOMES / TAX AMAZON DISTRICT 3 Phonebank
\nIn the past week all Seattle DSA members should have received a newsletter and the Tax Amazon / Green New Homes petition in the mail with the request to sign it and to mail it back.  This is an important way we’re going to help get the 30\,000 signatures needed to get on the ballot by July 1st. \nJoin SDSA District 3 members in calling other District 3 members to encourage them to sign and mail in the petition and it get involved in the movement to Tax Amazon. We’ll have a brief zoom to get everyone prepared for the phonebank.  \nThe zoom info will be posted in the District 3 slack channel or text 402-915-1242.

SUMMARY:Tax Amazon / Green New Homes Campaign is heating up! How can we take on big business and win? Next District 3 Mtg
DESCRIPTION:This past week three Democrats on the Seattle City Council shelved the bill our coalition has been fighting for to tax Amazon and the 800 richest corporations in Seattle to provide immediate Covid economic relief to the 100\,000 people in Seattle most in need. It would also fund the construction of union-built\, green\, social housing and environmental retrofitting of homes starting next year. \nIt’s clear\, if we want to tax big business we’re going to need to take this to the ballot. \nJoin District 3 members to discuss what the Tax Amazon / Green New Homes Campaign is\, how we can build a movement to tax big business\, what’s the role of the Democratic Party in the fight over taxing Amazon and wider reforms\, and what can we do in District 3 to win an Amazon Tax for Covid Relief & Green New Homes? \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87899859618 \nMeeting ID: 878 9985 9618 \n+12532158782 (Tacoma)

SUMMARY:Teamster Rebellion: District 3 Reading Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members to discus Chapters 8-10 of Teamster Rebellion. \n“Teamster Rebellion” is the dynamic story of  one of the most important strikes in modern labor history\, from one of the main organizers. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84509012329

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg Biography Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich.

SUMMARY:Tax Amazon for Green New Homes Committee Meeting & Phone Bank
DESCRIPTION:Background \nSince January\, the Tax Amazon coalition has been fighting for Seattle to pass a tax on the 800 richest corporations to provide immediate covid relief to Seattleites and to fund the construction of union-built green housing and home retrofitting\, putting thousands of people back to work after covid. The recent move by the City Council to delay discussing this legislation means we can’t rely on them to stand up to big business. We need to go all out to get the Amazon tax for green homes and green jobs on the November ballot and take the matter directly to the voters! Seattle DSA’s campaign as part of the Tax Amazon coalition is called Green New Homes because that’s what we’re fighting for. We have until approximately July 1 to help the coalition collect 21k valid signatures. \nThis Tuesday: Committee Meeting and Phone Bank \nWe’ve sent the ballot petition to every Seattle DSA member (didn’t get yours? Fill out this form). Now we need to follow up and make sure all our comrades sign the petition\, get others in their household to sign\, and send it back. \nOn Tuesday we’ll talk game plan for the next several weeks of our campaign: \n\n“Amazon Tax Prime” petition and delivery service\, an effort of the Tax Amazon coalition\nDistrict group phone banks and organizing\nInterstate banner drops\nNeighborhood postering\nDistrict community forums\n\nAnd then continue phone banking SDSA members to follow up with them about the ballot petition. \nIf you’re interested in getting involved in Tax Amazon for Green New Homes\, this is a great meeting to come to! \nFind the zoom link on slack (Tax Amazon committee channel) if you’re an SDSA member\, or register here. \nQuestions? email info@GreenNewHomes.org

SUMMARY:Covid Is the Newest Excuse for Police Brutality Next District 5 mtg
DESCRIPTION:Join SDSA District 5 for a discussion on police brutality this Tues\, May 19th 6:30pm.  \nAs long as there have been police\, there has been police brutality\, but the death of Trayvon Martin in 2012 and subsequent founding of the Black Lives Matter movement the following year served as an eye opener to many on just how deep the problem runs. Now\, in the age of Coronavirus\, we’re witnessing an even starker contrast in the undeniable reality of how police approach communities of color. \nWhat is the true role of the police? What would a society without the police look like? \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85183337343 \nMeeting ID: 851 8333 7343 \n+12532158782 (Tacoma)

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg’s Reform or Revolution: District 5 Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Join District 5 members for a dynamic discussion group on the reading “Reform or Revolution” by Rose Luxemburg this coming SUNDAY at NOON.  We’ll be reading and discussing the Chapters 1-4 (less than 20 pages). \nThis reading deals with the questions of whether we should fight for reforms and\, if so\, how?  Can we reform our way to socialism? Is it enough to elect a majority of socialist representatives? Is it possible to reform the capitalist system? Or do we need to overthrow capitalism with a mass movement and a revolutionary party of the working class? \nBring your thoughts\, ideas\, and questions!  Even if you don’t have time to read all of it (or any of it!)\, come anyway! \nReform or Revolution: https://www.marxists.org/archive/luxemburg/1900/reform-revolution/ch01.htm \nCheck the District 5 slack or text 402-915-1242 for the call in info.

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg Biography Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich.

SUMMARY:The Killings of George Floyd & Ahmaud Arbery: How should socialists fight racism & what can DSA do in Seattle? Next District 3 Mtg
DESCRIPTION:Join DSA District 3 members to discuss… \nThe killing of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia and the disproportionate effects of COVID19 on communities of color have brought to the fore\, once again\, the brutal reality for people of color under capitalism – unrelenting misery and oppression. How do we build a multi-racial movement in the US today in the era of Trump\, an open racist\, with our history of slavery and racism? What is the role of socialists in the fight against racism?  What can we do in Seattle DSA\, in Seattle\, in solidarity with the mass movement in Minneapolis that is demanding the police be arrested?   \nWe’ll also be discussing the tax Amazon for Green New Homes 🏡 campaign. The month of June is a critical month in the pursuit of 21\,000 signatures to get on the ballot in November.  Have you filled out your petition that was mailed to every Seattle DSA member? Need a petition or it picked up by a DSA member? Contact us! \nZoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81725270213

SUMMARY:Critical Pedagogy Reading Group: Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA Critical and Revolutionary Pedagogy Reading Group to discuss Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970.) Freire\, a Brazilian educator and philosopher\, was an advocate of “critical pedagogy” and believed that education cannot be divorced from politics and considered the acts of teaching and learning to be profoundly political acts. In Pedagogy of the Oppressed he offers a detailed class analysis of the relationship between colonizer and colonized within the framework of education. He famously critiques traditional education as an act of objectification and dehumanization that serves only the oppressors and keeps the oppressed out of power. Freire’s work has deeply influenced social movement leaders and organizers and has immediate implications for SDSA’s organizing work. \nReading: Preface and Chapter 1\n\nFor more information and to RSVP\, please contact Allen: rabaros[at]gmail.com

SUMMARY:Tax Amazon Signature Gathering
DESCRIPTION:A revolt is happening in society. People across the world are rising up for Black Lives\, for an end to the brutal police system used to enforce the domination of capital and capitalists over our lives; and an end to a system as a whole that lets 1 in 2000 black people die from Corona\, people to live in generations of hardship\, subpar housing\, underemployment\, long commutes\, broken up communities trying to hang on.  \nA key demand emerging out of the movement is: We need to defund the police\, take back our wealth from big business which makes daily use of the police and ICE\, and investment instead in our communities. \nDSA calls to: \n\nDefund the police\nStop the brutal attacks on protesters\nTax big business to fund the largest investment in affordable housing in this city’s history\n\nWe are fighting on all fronts. We’ll be doing this through tabling in front of grocery stores in as many districts as possible and phone/text banking. SUMMARY:BLM Uprising: As democratic socialists how can we support this historic uprising? Next District 5 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join District 5 members to discuss… \nThe murder in broad daylight of George Floyd has triggered massive popular protest worldwide\, not because it is a single event\, but because of the terror of racism that Black people have faced in this country since it was founded. The response from the political establishment includes curfews and mobilizations of the National Guard\, all in an attempt to maintain “order”. How can we help build multi-racial coalitions to fight for defunding the police and justice for all? \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/88448259332 \nif you’re interested in reading or watching a clip before the meeting\, here are some resources.  You don’t need to read or watch the video to participate. \nArticle about the Rainbow Coalition: \nhttps://www.teenvogue.com/story/fred-hampton-black-panthers-rainbow-coalition-poor-americans \nVideo with Bobby Lee: \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=js7SIWw7yEE&t=331s

SUMMARY:BLM Uprising: How can the movement win & how should DSA support it? Next District 3 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members to discuss our experiences\, what we think about the movement thus far and where we think it could go\, what we think DSA could be doing or should be doing\, what’s the role of socialists\, how we think the movement can win the demand to defund the police and whether DSA should support the demand to abolish the police.\n \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81896775544\nMeeting ID: 818 9677 5544\n+12532158782 (Tacoma) \n2 weeks into the uprising and the movement is still going strong.  This past weekend hundreds of thousands took to the streets\, this weekend promises more of the same.  The demand to defund the police has gained unprecedented momentum and\, according to recent polls\, 70% of Americans say there needs to be serious police reforms and by a margin of 2-1 support the protests.  But how can we win this demand? What role can DSA play? And more broadly\, what is the role of socialists? The ruling class is currently on its heels and are forced to accept reforms and they will try to divide the movement and stamp it out.  One way they may try to divide the movement is over the demand being raised by some in the movement of abolishing the police.  Should DSA support this demand?

SUMMARY:Should DSA support the call to abolish the police? & How can we abolish the police? Next District 3 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:One of the central demands that has emerged from the BLM uprising is to defund the police.  Alongside this\, many are going further and demanding to abolish the police.  Should DSA take up this call to abolish the police? What does it mean to abolish the police? Is this possible under capitalism? How would public safety look under socialism? \nAmerican public opinion is undergoing a transformative change in the wake of the George Floyd protests. Three-quarters of the country supports the demonstrations. An equal percentage believe Floyd’s death is a sign of broader problems in how police treat black Americans. New polls show broad support for a wide array of police reform measures. \nThe only policy that had clear opposition was defunding the police. How can we win a majority to support the demand to defund the police?  \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85968340290 \nMeeting ID: 859 6834 0290 \n+12532158782 (Tacoma)

SUMMARY:Seattle DSA Organizing Committee Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Seattle DSA Organizing Committee is the monthly meeting of co-chairs of working groups and district groups as well as Local Council members to discuss important issues facing the socialist movement and coordinate key aspects of our work. \nThis month the Internal Organizers are proposing that the Organizing Committee discuss the uprising for Black lives\, what SDSA has been doing to support the movement\, and how SDSA can help this movement win its demands in Seattle. We will also discuss the protest that Seattle DSA’s Local Council and our Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus agreed to organize soon in coordination with coalition partners. \nPlease mark your calendar: This Saturday\, June 20th\, 2 – 4 pm. \nIf you are a co-chair of a working group or district groups or if you are a Local Council member\, please RSVP here in order to get the Zoom link. \n\nThe Internal Organizers will send an agenda for co-chairs and Local Council members to review in the next couple days. In the meantime\, feel free to respond to us with any ideas for the agenda. \nThese meetings take place on the third Saturday of every month from 2- 4 pm — online during the pandemic. We expect daily protests to continue through Saturday\, which DSA members have been involved in every day. Nonetheless\, we think it’s important that we take one afternoon to meet and discuss these important issues. If something changes we will let you know\, but you can expect that we will be meeting as planned. \nWe’re looking forward to seeing everyone again\, and getting started on some of the awesome ideas that came up at our last meeting! \nIn Solidarity\, \nRamy\, Hannah\, and Manya (your Internal Organizers)

SUMMARY:Critical Pedagogy Reading Group
DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA Critical and Revolutionary Pedagogy Reading Group to discuss Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970.) Frieire\, a Brazilian educator and philosopher was an advocate of “critical pedagogy” who believed that education cannot be divorced from politics and considered the acts of teaching and learning to be profoundly political acts. In Pedagogy of the Oppressed he offers a detailed class analysis of the relationship between colonizer and colonized within the framework of education. He famously critiques traditional education as an act of objectification and dehumanization that servers only the oppressors and keeps the oppressed out of power.\nPlease join us on Saturday\, June 27th at 12:30pm via zoom.\nReading: Chapter 3\nFor more information please contact Allen rabaros@gmail.com

DESCRIPTION:Join District 5 members to discuss… \nThe Socialist Case for Reparations  \nSome questions to consider: How do we win support for it in the wider working class?  In the past\, there wasn’t majority support within the wider working class – How should this demand be posed to win a majority?  How can reparations be distributed?
