DESCRIPTION:Join the Seattle DSA District 2 reading group on the biography of Rosa Luxemberg by Paul Frölich. Rosa Luxemburg was an inspirational revolutionary leader\, socialist theoretician\, and tireless fighter for the working class right up until the moment when she was tragically murdered during the German Revolution. \nWhile Lenin and the Russian socialists faced brutal oppression which left little room for reformist hopes\, in Germany the situation was far different. The Social-Democratic Party of Germany  (SPD) included labor unionists\, social democrats\, democratic socialists\, revolutionaries of all stripes\, and many who hoped that socialism could be achieved through a peaceful and democratic path. \nThe situation was made immeasurably more complex by the collapse of the 2nd International at the onset of the first World War\, as well as the Russian Revolution which followed shortly. In this confusing situation\, the clarity of thought and the fighting spirit of Rosa Luxemberg were completely unmatched. She expanded Marxist theory with important works on imperialism and economics and fought ceaselessly for social revolution. Ultimately\, she was betrayed and murdered on orders from reformist leaders of the SPD during the failed German Revolution. \nPaul Frölich\, the author\, was a contemporary and comrade of Red Rosa. While many would have settled for a simple hagiography\, his work takes a serious look at Rosa Luxemberg’s politics and the thinking behind it. In a time where the socialist left is once again at a crossroads between the dual pull of reformist and revolutionary tendencies\, Frölich’s work raises essential questions on the nature of capitalism and the road to socialist transformation. \nIn her famous work Reform or Revolution\, Rosa Luxemburg concluded that “Between social reforms and revolution there exists for an inseparable connection. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Seattle DSA District 3 for a ZOOM screening and discussion of the 1971 documentary film\, The Murder of Fred Hampton. \nThe Black Panther Party was the most significant independent Black revolutionary movement in North America and the most radical mass organization of the Civil Rights Era. It brought together thousands of Black people to protect themselves from racist police violence and white supremacy and provided community support through social programs like the Free Breakfast for Children Program\, and was organized on a platform of explicit revolutionary socialism. \nFred Hampton was the Illinois chairman of the Black Panther Party when he was murdered in his home by police and FBI agents in 1969. SUMMARY:D2 Monthly Meeting – A Third Party for the Working Class: Not If but When
DESCRIPTION:Join comrades from District 2 (southeast Seattle) on Thursday August 20\, 6-8 pm\, for a lively Zoom discussion on the prospects for an independent working-class political party. \nAt the DSA national convention in 2019\, delegates overwhelmingly voted in favor of a resolution titled “Class Struggle Elections”  which stated: \nDSA is committed to building political organization independent of the Democratic Party and their capitalist donors …  In the longer term\, our goal is to form an independent working-class party\, but for now this does not rule out DSA-endorsed candidates running tactically on the Democratic Party ballot line. \nWithin Seattle DSA\, there exist multiple opinions on the timeframe for this activity. At our August 20 district 2 meeting\, you will have a chance to discuss these alternatives. Two comrades from Seattle DSA will set the stage by presenting two of the more widely held positions\, one in favor of a more short-term break with the Democratic Party\, and one in favor of the so-called “dirty break” strategy. \nBefore discussing our relationship with the Democratic Party and prospects of an independent working class party\, we will spend some time on the more immediate issue of police accountability\, with a power mapping exercise within D2. \nFor Zoom details\, RSVP here.

DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members and others to discuss organizing online town halls in districts 3 & 6 to pressure city councilmembers to stay true to their pledge to cut SPD by 50%. \nSeven out of nine Seattle City Council members pledged to defund the Seattle Police Department by 50% and reinvest those funds in community-led health and safety services. They voted to make some important cuts to the SPD budget\, but only 3%. During the 2021 budget negotiation process\, the campaign to defund the SPD by at least 50% must hold our City Council members accountable to not only our demands\, but also to their own promises. \nAs part of a resolution passed by the chapter last month\, SDSA is pushing to organize online town halls in as many districts as possible. Our comrades in the Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color caucus are leading the way in District 1. DESCRIPTION:A mythology surrounds the Democratic Party. We’re told that it’s the party that represents working people\, oppressed communities\, and the environment. This is largely based on the raft of social reforms known as the New Deal\, but also the election of Obama\, the first black President.  But do the Democrats deserve the mantle of being the party that represents working people? What is the true history of the New Deal?  Why did the scion of one of the wealthiest and most powerful capitalist families in the US (Roosevelt) go against the apparent interests of the capitalist system\, its representatives in both major parties\, and the corporate media and introduce far reaching reforms that benefited working people? Are we to believe that FDR was a socialist\, like Sanders suggested in a speech during his campaign? What is the true history of the New Deal\, of the Democratic Party? Whose interests do the Democratic Party ultimately represent\, working people or big business? As the experience of the recent veto override vote has taught us\, City Council will only meet the demands of the Defund SPD movement under massive pressure. For weeks\, and now on the biggest stage yet for the election\, Trump has been engaging in vast voter suppression that goes well beyond the usual GOP voter suppression\, which is also happening.  Trump has claimed that mail-in ballots will be fraudulent\, that the election is rigged against him\, has called on his supporters and the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” and go to polling stations\, has taken steps\, through his political appointees\, to slow down the mail\, and has said that the Supreme Court will decide the outcome. There are many scenarios where Trump and the GOP can sow confusion and chaos and\, unfortunately\, the Democratic Party has a rich history of rolling over in the face of GOP ruthlessness and militancy.  Will Trump try to steal the elections?  What are the scenarios that could play out on Nov 3?  Will there be right wing violence? What lessons does this history have for us today? Her work explores the intersection of race\, capitalism\, and gender within the framework of critical pedagogy. DESCRIPTION:“I will appoint judges that will overturn Roe v Wade”\, pledged Trump in 2016\, This coming week the Senate will vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court potentially taking a huge stride toward realizing the Right’s decades long struggle to overturn Roe vs. Wade.  This comes on the heels of Trump appointing a record amount of right wing judges – including 3 Supreme Court judges!- the vast majority of which the Democrats voted to confirm.  The threat to Roe V Wade\, and awhole raft of other reforms\, is clear and present. \nIndefensibly\, the Democratic Party threw in the towel before it even got in the ring by refusing to wage a fight to stop the confirmation of Barrett. In fact\, Biden has all but ruled out packing the court with liberal judges to offset the impact of a majority conservative court!  This is in keeping with the Democratic Party’s willful failure to fight for women’s rights against the remorseless assault by the GOP. DESCRIPTION:“We are a working class party now” announced Republican Senator Josh Hawney. “The future of the (Republican) party is based on a multiethnic\, multiracial working-class coalition\,” (Sen. Marco) Rubio recently said\, claiming that Republicans should recognize “the free market exists to serve our people. Our people don’t exist to serve the free market.”  \nTrump got over 10 million votes more than he did in 2016\, taking his total to nearly 75 million. Trump lost the election but has a stranglehold on the party\, will right wing populism and Trumpism continue dominating the GOP or will the establishment try to move on? The GOP beat back another Blue Wave delivering several upsets in the house and seem likely to hold onto the Senate. While voter suppression is widespread\, suppression alone cannot explain why Republicans are winning so many elections.  Is the GOP a new working class party?  \nBiden is nominating former Obama aides to key Cabinet positions and the threat of Biden unfurling policies that led to Trump in the first place is very real. This will undoubtedly engender discontent and lead many to drift into right-wing populism to express their inchoate anger at their falling living standards\, what should DSA and the broader Left do to push back against both a Democratic Party failing to take up the economic demands of poor and working people and the growing appeal of right-populism? DESCRIPTION:In January we’ll be voting on A Socialist Program for Seattle’s 2021 Elections\, which lays out what we’d like to see from DSA candidates who run for office or from those seeking an endorsement from DSA.  This has important bearings on our work as can be seen by the DSA Alderman Andre Vasquez who recently voted for an austerity budget in Chicago.  But also because there will be a mayoral and Seattle City Council elections this coming year. The electoral program shouldn’t be viewed as a set of requirements for running for office or seeking an endorsement but rather a bar to measure candidates by and for pointing toward our expectations and what is needed by working people and youth.   \nThere has been some controversy over the final point on the platform: \n13) Seattle is dominated by the Democratic Party\, with no Republican threat. The Democratic controlled state government bans rent control and brutally underfunds housing\, education\, and transit. Seattle DSA believes left-wing candidates for Seattle offices should run independent of the Democratic Party (as Kshama Sawant\, Nikkita Oliver\, and Jon Grant have done in recent years). DESCRIPTION:President-elect Biden has made clear from the moment he was elected that he plans to oversee a neoliberal\, racist\, business-as-usual agenda during his term. From his appointment of corporate lobbyists like Tom Vilsack\, a dairy/ago-industry exec\, to vehemently underscoring how he will not use executive action to pass a progressive agenda\, it’s clear that Biden is more interested in punching left than providing a way forward to the millions of people struggling right now. \nIf we let this do-nothing agenda go unchallenged\, we can be certain we will be facing a Trump 2.0 situation in four years. That’s why it’s vital the left comes together on Day 1 of Biden’s administration to get organized and show our commitment to fighting for Black Lives Matter\, real COVID relief\, Medicare for All\, a Green New Deal\, and an end to deportations and detentions. We have four years to get organized and build a working-class alternative. \nSeattle DSA will be organizing an Inauguration Day (or week) event in January to help bring the left together and fight for our shared demands.
