DESCRIPTION:Seattle DSA is holding another rally Saturday March 20th at 2 pm to support the Alabama Amazon warehouse workers who are fighting to form the nation’s first union at an Amazon workplace!!\n\nJoin us for a meeting to plan the rally on the International Day of Solidarity with Alabama Amazon Workers. No experience needed. \nNearly 5\,800 workers\, 70% of whom are Black\, have begun standing up against the second largest company in the country and the second richest man in the world\, Jeff Bezos.  In 2020\, Bezos made $35 MILLION PER HOUR\, while most Amazon workers made only $15 per hour. They also work under grueling\, unsafe\, stressful conditions\, risking their lives during the pandemic.  If this union election wins\, the impact on labor and anti-racist organizing in the south and around the country would be enormous. Washington families need Governor Inslee to extend the moratorium\, and our state legislators to pass the strongest possible tenant rights protections this month.\nThat includes passing bills 1236 and 5160\, guaranteeing “just cause” eviction protections statewide and banning evictions for back-debt accrued during the moratorium\, among other protections. While the Democratic Party controls both legislative houses\, unless the party leadership prioritizes the fight for tenant rights – and unless we build strong enough grassroots pressure – there is a big danger that the landlord lobby and Republican obstruction tactics will kill or water down this vital legislation.\nJoin our coalition for a Tenant Rights Town Hall to demand action from our state legislators\, learn about the bills we are backing\, and find out how to get involved in the fight for housing justice.\n—–\nSeattle DSA believes that\, at root\, quality stable housing must be treated as a human right\, guaranteed to all regardless of ability to pay\, not as a commodity sold to the highest bidders. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin Seattle Democratic Socialists of America and Be:Seattle in conversation with Cea Weaver of Housing Justice For All to discuss the movement behind New York’s historic wins for tenant rights in 2019. \nIn the last 5 years\, Housing Justice for All\, a statewide coalition of 100 grassroots organizations\, tenants\, and homeless New Yorkers\, created a movement that has shocked New York’s powerful real estate lobby and is shifting the power balance at the state capital. As Washington State ends its legislative session\, New York’s housing justice movement is a lesson on creating coalitions with the power to demand sweeping tenant protections that extends beyond each legislative session. \nCea Weaver is a housing organizer\, community advocate\, and urban planner in New York City. She currently coordinates Housing Justice for All\, a statewide coalition of over 100 organizations that represent tenants and homeless New Yorkers in Albany. She coordinated the 2019 campaign to strengthen and expand tenants’ rights across the State and in 2020 worked to win an eviction moratorium during the COVID-19 pandemic. DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 comrades for our monthly movie night! \nThis month we’ll be watching 5 Broken Cameras\, a first-hand account of protests in Bil’in\, a West Bank village affected by the Israeli West Bank barrier. \nWhen his fourth son\, Gibreel\, is born in 2005\, self-taught cameraman Emad Burnat\, a Palestinian villager\, gets his first camera. At the same time in his village of Bil’in\, the Israelis begin bulldozing village olive groves to build a barrier to separate Bil’in from the Jewish settlement Modi’in Illit. The barrier’s route cuts off 60% of Bil’in farmland and the villagers resist this seizure of more of their land by the settlers. \nBurnat films the army and police beating and arresting villagers and activists who come to support them. Settlers destroy Palestinian olive trees and attack Burnat when he tries to film them. The army raids the village in the middle of the night to arrest children. He\, his friends\, and brothers are arrested or shot; some are killed. DESCRIPTION:From Chile to Columbia\, struggle is breaking out across Latin America from the intolerable conditions of endemic poverty\, pervasive violence and corruption\, and the economic and social devastation of the COVID pandemic.  And now Peru has marked its place on this continuum of struggle with the election of a self-described Marxist as President\, Pedro Castillo from the Peru Libre\, a socailist party. Castillo is a labor leader who gained national prominence as a leader of multiple teachers strikes. Castillo also comes from an indigenous background\, making him only the 2nd President in Peruvian history to be elected from those regions.  He ran on a program of agrarian reforms and against the neo-liberal agenda that has impoverished the majority of this mineral rich country.   \nProtest movements and radical politics are shaking the foundations of Latin American society and elsewhere across the world\, what does this tell us about the period we are entering? What’s needed to win these struggles and overthrow capitalism? As oppressed peoples rise up\, should socialists uncritically cheer from the sidelines or are there other things we can do to support the movements? DESCRIPTION:Join D3 Members (all are welcome!) for a discussion on …. \nThe largest strike in the US is happening at 5 Nabisco production and distribution facilities in Portland OR\, Richmond VA\, Chicago IL\, Aurora CO\, Norcross GA involving over 1000 workers.  Like the Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama who tried to unionize and the Frito Lays workers who struck earlier this summer\, these workers are disproportionately women\, immigrants\, people of color and Black working people.  In fact\, the majority of workers in food production from field to factory are people of color\, Black\, and women.  \nIt’s completely outrageous that Nabisco\, who made over $5 billion during the pandemic\, is now engaged in a full frontal assault on the factory and distribution workers who are responsible for those profits.  This is in line with our local healthcare workers struggle at Harborview and Cascade Behavioural Health\, where Big Business lauds workers as heroes (which they all are) while they take an axe to wages\, benefits\, and working conditions to maximize their profits.   \nJoin us to hear from a Portland DSA member who has been at the strike line most days of the 3 week strike and is working closely with the striking workers.  We’ll discuss what the main issues are\, what actions the bosses are taking to defeat the strike\, and how socialists are supporting the strike.   \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5206989259

DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members (all are welcome!) to discuss… \nThe Texas abortion ban is an unprecedented and draconian attack on reproductive rights.  For the first time since the passage of Roe v Wade in 1973\, the US Supreme Court has consciously failed to protect the constitutionally protected right for abortion\, effectively overturning Roe v Wade for millions of women in Texas.   \nWhile this dastardly law effects all women\, it will disproportionately impact poor women\, women of color\, undocumented immigrants\, and Black women all of whom make up the majority of women who seek abortions in Texas.  This law represents a clear and present danger to reproductive rights and it is not at all certain Roe v Wade will survive\, especially given the raft of copycat bills following in its wake and the Mississippi “heartbeat” bill the US Supreme Court will begin deliberation on in the fall. \nWhat is the Texas abortion ban\, how is it different? We tax the growing population of poor and working people more than the bloated billionaires who locally drive the global tech industry. \nFor over 15 years\, progressives have worked to pass legislation to impose an income tax on the uber rich in this state to little avail. Since Wa. Supreme Court cases from 1934 and 1951\, income tax has been ruled unconstitutional in the state. Yet\, there are some creative measures advocates are working on to pass a wealth tax again in the upcoming 2021-22 Washington State Legislative Session. Passing this legislation could lead to legal reconsiderations of these outdated rulings. \nChair of the Finance Committee\, Rep. Frame introduced HB1406 in the 2020-21 session\, guaranteeing it to get a hearing this session. HB1406 would implement a 1% tax on billionaire’s non-tangible wealth\, i.e. stocks\, bonds. HB1406 would lead to more than $2.5 billion in revenue for the state a year and would only impose a tax on around 30-50 of the richest individuals in the state. According to one estimate\, Jeff Bezos would pay $1.9 billion a year alone in taxes to Washington State. \nMany organizations and coalitions are working on this project\, including Invest in Washington Now and Economic Opportunity Institute.
