DESCRIPTION:Join D3 Members (all are welcome!) for a discussion on …. \nThe largest strike in the US is happening at 5 Nabisco production and distribution facilities in Portland OR\, Richmond VA\, Chicago IL\, Aurora CO\, Norcross GA involving over 1000 workers.  Like the Amazon warehouse workers in Alabama who tried to unionize and the Frito Lays workers who struck earlier this summer\, these workers are disproportionately women\, immigrants\, people of color and Black working people.  In fact\, the majority of workers in food production from field to factory are people of color\, Black\, and women.  \nIt’s completely outrageous that Nabisco\, who made over $5 billion during the pandemic\, is now engaged in a full frontal assault on the factory and distribution workers who are responsible for those profits.  This is in line with our local healthcare workers struggle at Harborview and Cascade Behavioural Health\, where Big Business lauds workers as heroes (which they all are) while they take an axe to wages\, benefits\, and working conditions to maximize their profits.   \nJoin us to hear from a Portland DSA member who has been at the strike line most days of the 3 week strike and is working closely with the striking workers.  We’ll discuss what the main issues are\, what actions the bosses are taking to defeat the strike\, and how socialists are supporting the strike.   \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/5206989259

Congressman and DSA member Jamaal Bowman has introduced the Green New Deal for Public Schools Act into Congress\, which would inject over $1 trillion into our public school system to make our schools more equitable\, more sustainable\, and more resilient. Our kids and educators deserve working and learning spaces that are healthy and allow them to thrive. DESCRIPTION:Join District 3 members (all are welcome!) to discuss… \nThe Texas abortion ban is an unprecedented and draconian attack on reproductive rights.  For the first time since the passage of Roe v Wade in 1973\, the US Supreme Court has consciously failed to protect the constitutionally protected right for abortion\, effectively overturning Roe v Wade for millions of women in Texas.   \nWhile this dastardly law effects all women\, it will disproportionately impact poor women\, women of color\, undocumented immigrants\, and Black women all of whom make up the majority of women who seek abortions in Texas.  This law represents a clear and present danger to reproductive rights and it is not at all certain Roe v Wade will survive\, especially given the raft of copycat bills following in its wake and the Mississippi “heartbeat” bill the US Supreme Court will begin deliberation on in the fall. \nWhat is the Texas abortion ban\, how is it different? How can we defeat the right wing offensive? We tax the growing population of poor and working people more than the bloated billionaires who locally drive the global tech industry. \nFor over 15 years\, progressives have worked to pass legislation to impose an income tax on the uber rich in this state to little avail. Since Wa. Supreme Court cases from 1934 and 1951\, income tax has been ruled unconstitutional in the state. Yet\, there are some creative measures advocates are working on to pass a wealth tax again in the upcoming 2021-22 Washington State Legislative Session. Passing this legislation could lead to legal reconsiderations of these outdated rulings. \nChair of the Finance Committee\, Rep. Frame introduced HB1406 in the 2020-21 session\, guaranteeing it to get a hearing this session. HB1406 would implement a 1% tax on billionaire’s non-tangible wealth\, i.e. stocks\, bonds. HB1406 would lead to more than $2.5 billion in revenue for the state a year and would only impose a tax on around 30-50 of the richest individuals in the state. According to one estimate\, Jeff Bezos would pay $1.9 billion a year alone in taxes to Washington State. \nMany organizations and coalitions are working on this project\, including Invest in Washington Now and Economic Opportunity Institute. DESCRIPTION:A new political education series to sharpen our thinking and communication skills in our organizing for democratic socialism.  Many areas of practice will be addressed and tied into the struggle to create an Ecosocialist society. Attend this webinar to hear how you can fight back for the working class. \n___________________ \nThe challenge we face today is one that socialists could not have imagined just a few years ago: how to advance socialist politics on a mass scale. As impressive as DSA’s growth has been in recent years\, we have a long way to go. \nIt’s not just that we need more socialists; we also need them in the right places. That means more respected leaders and organizers throughout all sectors of the multiracial working class\, capable of moving people to action. \nThis is not some romantic or nostalgic vision; it is based on a strategic assessment that the organized working class is the only force with both the material interest and the place in the structure of the economy to transform society and build socialism. \nIn previous eras socialists were often respected workplace leaders. These radicals helped organize workers into a collective force that went beyond workplace fights and into the political arena. \nThat is much less common today. The left often finds itself on the outside looking in when workplace struggle erupts. Socialists are more likely to be organizing strike support than leading strikes. \nThis divide has weakened both workers’ movements and the left. The socialist movement is stronger when tied to workers’ movements\, and vice versa. Rebuilding the link between them is key to revitalizing both\, and to keeping our movement grounded in the reality of workers’ lives.
