We tax the growing population of poor and working people more than the bloated billionaires who locally drive the global tech industry. \nFor over 15 years\, progressives have worked to pass legislation to impose an income tax on the uber rich in this state to little avail. Since Wa. Supreme Court cases from 1934 and 1951\, income tax has been ruled unconstitutional in the state. Yet\, there are some creative measures advocates are working on to pass a wealth tax again in the upcoming 2021-22 Washington State Legislative Session. Passing this legislation could lead to legal reconsiderations of these outdated rulings. \nChair of the Finance Committee\, Rep. Frame introduced HB1406 in the 2020-21 session\, guaranteeing it to get a hearing this session. HB1406 would implement a 1% tax on billionaire’s non-tangible wealth\, i.e. stocks\, bonds. HB1406 would lead to more than $2.5 billion in revenue for the state a year and would only impose a tax on around 30-50 of the richest individuals in the state. According to one estimate\, Jeff Bezos would pay $1.9 billion a year alone in taxes to Washington State. \nMany organizations and coalitions are working on this project\, including Invest in Washington Now and Economic Opportunity Institute. The media frenzy around the rapidly escalating tensions between Russia and the U.S. gives dizzying and terrifying reports of arms deals\, troop deployments\, sanctions\, and political standoffs. Will Russia invade the Ukraine? Why is this happening?  What role does or has imperialism played?  Who is to blame? \nUnfortunately\, the Left in the U.S. has been caught mostly flatfooted in its approach to this international crisis. While DSA and some left-wing members of congress have issued good statements in opposition to any escalation to this costly saber rattling\, a much deeper and more widespread preparation of the U.S. and Russian working-classes is needed to prevent war and fight imperialism in their respective countries. Attend this webinar to hear how you can fight back for the working class. \n___________________ \nThe challenge we face today is one that socialists could not have imagined just a few years ago: how to advance socialist politics on a mass scale. As impressive as DSA’s growth has been in recent years\, we have a long way to go. \nIt’s not just that we need more socialists; we also need them in the right places. That means more respected leaders and organizers throughout all sectors of the multiracial working class\, capable of moving people to action. \nThis is not some romantic or nostalgic vision; it is based on a strategic assessment that the organized working class is the only force with both the material interest and the place in the structure of the economy to transform society and build socialism. \nIn previous eras socialists were often respected workplace leaders. These radicals helped organize workers into a collective force that went beyond workplace fights and into the political arena. \nThat is much less common today. The left often finds itself on the outside looking in when workplace struggle erupts. Socialists are more likely to be organizing strike support than leading strikes. \nThis divide has weakened both workers’ movements and the left. The socialist movement is stronger when tied to workers’ movements\, and vice versa. Rebuilding the link between them is key to revitalizing both\, and to keeping our movement grounded in the reality of workers’ lives.

DESCRIPTION:The Supreme Court made clear they plan to overturn Roe v Wade\, which would enable most states in the country to ban the right to choose an abortion.  Planned Parenthood and its allies have organized some protests\, which we mobilized for\, but Planned Parenthood’s message is often just “vote for Democrats\,” which has proven insufficient for stopping this threat to our rights. \nThe Democrats currently control the White House\, House\, and Senate\, and they failed twice to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act\, which would codify Roe v Wade into law.  Obama promised to pass similar legislation but failed to deliver\, despite having a filibuster-proof majority in Congress. \nNor have the Democrats exercised their power to expand the Supreme Court to put a progressive majority on the court. \nThese are just some of the reasons why we need to build the socialist working-class wing of the feminist movement and attract more people to join DSA. \nSign up HERE to get notified about upcoming socialist feminist activities and to receive the Zoom link for this meeting!  Please mark your calendar and invite friends.  We will discuss and organize the next steps for our work.  Ideas so far include mobilizing and preparing for more protests\, a public meeting\, and a fundraiser for abortion access.

DESCRIPTION:Seattle DSA’s Healthcare Working Group is excited to be a cosponsor of the 2022 Seattle March for Healthcare Justice on July 30th\, which just so happens to be the 57th anniversary of the passage of Medicare!\n\nEvent page (information & RSVP):\nhttps://actionnetwork.org/events/save-the-date-march-for-healthcare-justice-celebrating-57-years-of-medicare\n\nDetails are still being worked out\, so RSVPing is the best way to be sure and stay up to date. The current plan is to march along MLK Way starting and ending at a park where we can have featured speakers.\n\nThere are so many reasons to march for healthcare justice this year:\n\nWe are still deeply impacted by the COVID pandemic. A new study estimates that more than 330\,000 lives could have been saved by universal healthcare.\nWe just lost Roe V Wade – now is the time to DEMAND universal healthcare with full coverage of abortion be passed immediately to remove all financial barriers to reproductive care.\nMedicare is currently under attack of privatization through the REACH program – we need the Biden administration to know that we see what we’re doing and we won’t stand for it.\nWe have a serious chance at getting statewide single payer healthcare on the ballot for Washington state\nThe midterms are coming up soon and we need Medicare for All to be a non-negotiable electoral issue!\n\nAs with all marches\, promotion and turnout are essential. Please share this action with as many people as you can think of and invite a friend or two to join you. We have just a few weeks before we march so this is an all hands on deck moment!\n\nWe are so fortunate to be cosponsoring this event with Medicare for All EVERYWHERE and Whole Washington and we expect this coalition to grow leading up to the end of the month. Last year’s event was an incredible success featuring fantastic speakers like Stephanie Gallardo\, Nikkita Oliver\, and Kshama Sawant. We know that the community will come out again to march for healthcare justice! See you on the 30th!

This is a critical step in getting her elected! \nWe will meet at the north end of Jefferson Park to knock doors in south Beacon Hill. We will have clipboards\, buttons\, and campaign literature packets. \nNo experience required\, training on site provided. We will be using the Field Edge for NationBuilder app\, which we encourage you to download and create an account beforehand. \nIf you plan to canvass with us\, make sure you bring good walking shoes for a couple hours of walking\, a charged phone\, and check the weather for rain.
