Join the Seattle DSA Critical and Revolutionary Pedagogy Reading Group to discuss Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970.) Freire, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, was an advocate of “critical pedagogy” and believed that education cannot be divorced from politics and considered the acts of teaching and learning to be profoundly political acts. In Pedagogy of the Oppressed he offers a detailed class analysis of the relationship between colonizer and colonized within the framework of education. He famously critiques traditional education as an act of objectification and dehumanization that serves only the oppressors and keeps the oppressed out of power. Freire’s work has deeply influenced social movement leaders and organizers and has immediate implications for SDSA’s organizing work.
