We invite you to join us for a discussion on what we can expect in the year ahead:
Starbucks workers are organizing from Buffalo to our very own Seattle, making history for the food-service sector. Meanwhile, activists are preparing for May 1st actions to cancel student debt, while the Biden Administration makes increasingly clear this is yet another promise they will fold on. Defenders of reproductive rights are mobilizing to the best of their ability with very little leadership from mainstream liberal organizations.
It’s a time of both raised class-consciousness, and a feeling of incredible helplessness. The Democrats catapult toward disaster at the midterms, leaving space for dangerous and disingenuous right wing politicians and media outlets to paint themselves as populists. It’s up to the left and the labor movement to provide an alternative.
Jane MacAlevey said last month: “We need way more picket lines and a very different approach to them from [Biden’s] administration, or we are going to face a brutal, brutal discussion a year from now when the House and the Senate are lost … and the possibility of ongoing Trumpism.” We can add: we need way more protests to defend abortion rights, many more actions to fight racism, and many more people involved to build toward a powerful socialist movement.
However, these are scary times and many feel futile. Let’s discuss what DSA can do to build toward a powerful alternative based on the power of the multiracial working class.
See you on Thursday, January 27, 6.30pm! Hopefully in person in the park near 42 Ave S/Juneau S, or – if it rains – over Zoom (in that case we will send around a link and let everybody know that we are not meeting in person)!
In solidarity,
Your D2 CoConvenersÂ
Harris Liebermann, Phil Rudd, Stephan Kimmerle
