The Fight Against Fascism in the U.S.A.
Lessons From the 1930’s – 40’s
8-week series, beginning January 28
Delve into gripping first-person accounts by anti-fascist organizers from the Great Depression era. The rise of fascism in Europe has been well-documented, but the home-grown Nazi movement it inspired is rarely discussed. This booklet is a compilation by participants who mounted successful campaigns to counter burgeoning fascist movements in New York, Minneapolis and Los Angeles, where they confronted organizations like the German-American Bund and the Silver Shirts, which emerged out of North Carolina, and demagogues like Father Coughlin, an ultra-right Catholic priest. Their stories contain valuable lessons for today’s anti-fascist activists in how we can unite unions, leftists and community organizations to effectively oppose racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny and red-baiting.
