Socialist Night School: The Strike Wave

May 13, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Socialist Night School is an open course that provides a chance to develop our politics together, regardless of background knowledge or whether you’ve attended a class before. New members and lifelong socialists, all are welcome! To sign up for our mailing list or to find out more, e-mail us at [email protected]

From West Virginia to LA, strikes swept across the country last year in numbers not seen since the 1980s.  Nearly 500,000 workers participated in major work stoppages in 2018, a stunning increase over a near record low of 25,000 the previous year. The workers won major victories, and the momentum created by their actions is continuing into this year.

For this session we will use the LA teachers strike as an example of a highly successful action, and analyze how, why, and what they were able to win. We will also discuss the rank-and-file strategy and its importance to our work as socialist organizers. We’ve included a reading with some labor history to give some context to the challenges faced by workers and organizers today.
