The Lucas Plan was an instance of 1970’s aerospace workers laying out a comprehensive vision of how their labor could be repurposed to fulfill social needs. Faced with layoffs due to cuts in military spending, workers came up with 150 socially useful products that they had the know-how to produce. These included wind turbines, energy-efficient heat pumps, and hybrid power packs for cars.
What does workplace democracy mean in practice? How could it help provide not only well-paying and meaningful work, but also address the existential threat of climate change? How would we win it?
Join the Tech Worker Labor Organizing and Education Group to examine The Lucas Plan, along with how it applies to current labor and environmental struggles.
