“We are a working class party now” announced Republican Senator Josh Hawney. “The future of the (Republican) party is based on a multiethnic, multiracial working-class coalition,” (Sen. Marco) Rubio recently said, claiming that Republicans should recognize “the free market exists to serve our people. Our people don’t exist to serve the free market.”
Trump got over 10 million votes more than he did in 2016, taking his total to nearly 75 million. Trump lost the election but has a stranglehold on the party, will right wing populism and Trumpism continue dominating the GOP or will the establishment try to move on? The GOP beat back another Blue Wave delivering several upsets in the house and seem likely to hold onto the Senate. While voter suppression is widespread, suppression alone cannot explain why Republicans are winning so many elections. Is the GOP a new working class party?
Biden is nominating former Obama aides to key Cabinet positions and the threat of Biden unfurling policies that led to Trump in the first place is very real. This will undoubtedly engender discontent and lead many to drift into right-wing populism to express their inchoate anger at their falling living standards, what should DSA and the broader Left do to push back against both a Democratic Party failing to take up the economic demands of poor and working people and the growing appeal of right-populism? Will 2022 see the return of GOP control of Congress? 2024 Trump 2.0?
