Immigration Justice Working Group

Total freedom to migrate; humanity has no borders

No one is illegal on stolen land. We would like to acknowledge that we are on the traditional land of the first people of Seattle, the Duwamish People past and present and honor with gratitude the land itself and the Duwamish Tribe.

Seattle DSA rejects a global system that facilitates the movement of capital across borders but denies human beings the freedom to live with dignity in the communities of their choice. We demand full and equal rights for all regardless of citizenship, an end to all forms of immigrant detention and imprisonment, and a humane, publicly funded immigration system that actively supports people who choose to move to the United States.

Upcoming Actions

Fair Fight Bond Fund

Seattle DSA played a key role with WAISN in launching the Fair Fight bond fund (FFBD). Detainees are not guaranteed rights to an attorney nor an interpreter. We continue to fundraise to liberate immigrants out of the NWDC. In launching the FFBD, we work to give immigrants a fair fight against the deportation machine. To date, SDSA has helped raise ~$15K.

Paying for freedom is not the end. Launching the bond fund and building a support network are crucial first steps. We will not rest until we abolish ICE. In that shared struggle, the people can and will shut down the unjust prison system.

Court Accompaniment

Data shows that when community is present at bond hearings, judges set a lower bond. Washington’s immigration bonds sit among the highest in the nation. Bond may go as high as $35K. Freeing someone to be with the family can be the difference between life and death. At home, they enjoy support from friends and family to organize and fight! Seattle DSA stands side by side.

We continue supporting WAISN in building their Western WA court accompaniment field team. SDSA helped train over 50 people to date. They show up when needed and we turn out people for interviews. SDSA recruited and trained volunteers for the WAISN hotline’s court accompaniment efforts as well.

Open Borders

DSA supports the uninhibited transnational free movement of people, demilitarization of the U.S.-Mexico border, abolition of the agencies of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection, decriminalization of immigration, and a pathway to citizenship for all non-citizen residents. We will not allow Trump to scapegoat immigrants for the results of neoliberal austerity nor use ICE to bust our unions.

WA Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN)

Seattle DSA IJWG has become a staple at WAISN general meetings, Accompaniment, and Bond Fund meetings. Not only have been bringing a socialist analysis to what we’re up against and how to organize, but we also help carry out the field work in supporting refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants’ needs as needed to build a worker-focused, pro-immigrant network to support immigrants both inside and outside the NWDC, but also to build a base to grow SDSA for future campaigns.
