Voting as-it-is Today

Seattle DSA during COVID uses General Membership Meeting (GMM) registration, cross-referenced against a current member roster from National, then measures whether 10% of our membership is at a GMM to make a majority decision binding.

In our bylaws, under Article III., Membership, Section 3., Proxy Voting, it outlines that the Local Council should explore proxy voting without defining what counts as a proxy. Examples defining potential proxy voting mechanisms and a simplified name are below:

Would attending and voting at one of many meetings, i.e. days/nights, in neighborhoods/districts count (satellite voting)?
Would you like to designate a trusted member to vote on your behalf (representative voting)?
Would you like our entire membership to vote (absentee voting)?

Keep in mind that any of the above would keep the existing quorum standards: 10% or more of the membership must participate in each instance. Valid concerns to keep in mind: what about people who work nights? how do we ensure space for dissent and developing mutual understanding? How do we ensure those bottom-lining the work being done are also able to participate and vote? These are all alternative ways of expanding democracy: there's no final analysis because we're investigating the question first from members like you.
