Seattle DSA stands with SEIU 1199NW!

Nurses and healthcare workers at Swedish Medical Center are going on strike January 28 – 30! We encourage all Seattle DSA members who are able to stand with SEIU 1199NW in their fight for a fair contract that addresses severe under-staffing and prioritizes patient safety. To learn more about their strike, please read this press release from SEIU 1199NW. Better yet, join the picket line, ask them about their fight, and listen to their stories!

If you are able, join the picket line on DAY ONE! The strike begins at 7 AM on Tuesday, 01/28. The picket lines will run continuously at First Hill, Cherry Hill, Ballard, Edmonds and Issaquah campuses. The picket lines at Redmond and Mill Creek will run from 7 AM to 7 PM. The Edmonds, Redmond, or Issaquah pickets in particular need support!

If you can’t join us at the march or on the picket line, if you are able please consider donating to the Swedish Strike Solidarity fund. This fund will help support the workers on strike, and is especially important for low wage workers who will be most impacted by the loss of pay.

Guidelines for joining the picket line
– We are showing up to support the workers. Ask questions and listen. We are there to support their labor action, not to promote the chapter.
– Respect the workers’ plan for the strike. Follow their directions and defer to them while on the line. For example, learn their chants rather than trying to step in with one of your own.
– Be aware of media presence. Do not speak on behalf of the workers – step back and let them speak for themselves. Do not speak on behalf of the chapter.
– Be respectful and kind at all times.
