Renters Rising! From Tax Amazon to Rent Suspension Next District 5 Mtg

“People are making a choice between rent and food, and that’s not a choice they should have to make,”

Across Seattle and beyond, working people are facing this grim choice as they are being forced to bear the brunt of the economic calamity unleashed by the Covid-19 response. Meanwhile, Jeff Bezos’ wealth increased by $15 billion in April, landlords are raising rents, politicians are enriching themselves through insider trading, and big corporations are benefitting from the bailout package. A critical question the economic crisis poses is: who is going to pay for this crisis, working people or big business?  

Right now Seattle DSA, under the banner Green New Homes, is actively involved in the Tax Amazon coalition and movement and is currently preparing to ramp up petition signature gathering to get Tax Amazon on the ballot in November.

Just yesterday the majority of the Seattle City Council, led by Counncilmembers Herbold, Mosqueda, and Gonzalez essentiallY killed the Tax Amazon legislation by Sawant and Morales that would have taxed Amazon and other big corporations to help struggling working people pay rent and other vital life expenses.

So it’s critical we do our part to get the 30,000 signatures needed to get Tax Amazon on the ballot.
