June 18, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Black Lives Matter

District 2 DSA Meeting
Thursday June 18, 6-8pm
https://zoom.us/j/94766804792

The uprisings sparked by the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police continue across the country. In Seattle DSA members have been participating in protests citywide and in our communities to uplift the calls for justice, and the demands of the growing movement against police violence, oppression, and racism. You can read Seattle DSA’s Statement written in conjunction with our Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color Caucus here.

Our upcoming District 2 meeting next Thursday, June 18 from 6-8pm via zoom will be a space for us to come together and discuss our experiences during these uprisings, the fight against racism, and learn about the questions these uprisings are grappling with, including whether to call for defunding or abolishing the police. Another important discussion is .

  • We will start the meeting with a brief overview of the local, national, and global context in which the protests are happening.
  • This will be followed by an update from a member of the Seattle Education Association on their recent resolution in support of the key demands of the movement.
  • Finally we will open the floor for comrades to share their experiences — the good, the bad, and the ugly — and to ideas about what role socialists can or should play in the current movement

Here is a rough agenda for the meeting:

6:00-6:15 Introductions – all, moderated by SDSA D2 co-conveners

6:15-6:25 Set the stage for the debate with an overview the current moment we are in – SDSA D2 member

6:25-6:35 Update from Afrosocialists and Socialists of Color caucus

6:35-6:45 Update on Seattle Education Association (SEA) resolution in support of the above demands, and campaign to remove Seattle police union from King County Labor Council – from SEA rank and file member

6:45-7:50 Open discussion – moderated by SDSA D2 co-conveners

7:50-8:00 Announcements

Seattle DSA members have been distributing food and water at demonstrations across the city, as well as gathering signatures in support of the 3 main demands put forward by the movement and which SDSA has endorsed: Defund SPD, Invest in our communities, and don’t prosecute protestors. In addition we have been supporting the call for Mayor Jenny Durkan to resign and our Tax Amazon for Green New Homes Campaign to build affordable housing and help fight displacement.

If you’re interested in getting involved with DSA District 2’s efforts please reach out to one of the Co-Conveners (Aram, Deepa, or Manuel) or email [email protected] to get looped in.

The district 2 group within Seattle DSA is resuming our monthly meetings on the third Thursday of every month.
