Last October, after a year marked by mass protests over rising wealth inequality, Chileans voted overwhelmingly to create a new constitution—one that would replace the 1980 document drawn up by the country’s former dictator, Augusto Pinochet. It was a major step in the political revolution against Chile’s neoliberal regime.

What’s next for the creation of Chile’s new constitution? What social forces and political parties are involved? And what does Chile’s recent political history tell us about the challenges and prospects of a new road to democratic socialism?

Joining us to help make sense of all of this is Abigail Gutmann-Gonzalez. Gutmann-Gonzalez grew up in a rural community in post-dictatorial Chile and much of her early experiences there were foundational to her understanding of and belief in the working class. She has been a member of DSA since 2017 and is the former two-term Co-Chair of East Bay DSA. She currently resides in Berkeley, California.

You don’t need to be an expert on international politics or a Seattle DSA member to enjoy this lecture and the Q&A that follows. If you’d like to learn more about the past and future of the Chilean left, please join us!
