DSA is organizing phone banking nationally to push for the passage of the PRO Act, from March 21 through 27, https://actionnetwork.org/forms/proactphonebank. We should join that effort!
What is the PRO Act?
The Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act would dismantle “Right to Work” laws in all states. It would allow solidarity strikes of workers in different industries, significantly improve the protection of workers organizing a union at their workplace, and make it harder for bosses to engage in union busting. This act has the potential to reorganize relations between the classes in the US in our favor, which is why it faces opposition.
What needs to happen?
The Act passed the House on March 9, but faces the threat of being killed in the Senate. Despite the Democrats having a majority, some moderate Democrats believe that working class rights are less important than the rights of the Republican minority to filibuster and block passage. Though a majority of Democrats seem willing to vote for the PRO Act, unfortunately most of them don’t want to turn on the heat for this legislation by mobilizing and pushing aggressively for its passage.
However, DSA is! We can play a role in this effort. If you already feel confident enough to help phone bank, please sign up here: https://actionnetwork.org/forms/proactphonebank. If you need more information or want to talk about how to phone bank, what you’ll experience, or just want to discuss this struggle, please join us on Thursday, March 25, 8pm for a 1 hour meeting. It would also be helpful to keep some time open on Friday and Saturday of that week for calling people to increase the pressure!
Manuel C, our previous co-chair, and an experienced union organizer and shop steward will kick us off. He’ll help us understand the ins and outs of this act – and how to talk to people about it.
