Counterprotest Anti-LGBTQ Hate Group MAYDAYUSA

May 24 @ 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm

CALL TO ACTION SATURDAY, MAY 24th

Antiqueer, transphobic, anti-reproductive healthcare hate tour MayDayUSA (deceptive name, right?!) is making a stop in Seattle to spread their bigotry and cry about queer people existing under the guise of a family-friendly event complete with free children’s haircuts. Community members and organizations are rallying to counter the event by celebrating our queerness and say no to hate. Seattle DSA’s Mobilization Committee is coordinating with multiple groups to give these bigoted astroturfers a proper Seattle welcome.

This is expected to be an all-day event at Cal Anderson Park. Specific location of the hate rally is TBD but indicators point to the Bobby Morris Playfields on the southern end of the park. A group of local musicians and artists are organizing a punk show at the skatepark on the southwest corner of the park (see attached image) and other actions will be occurring throughout the afternoon and evening in and around Cal Anderson. We will plan to stage our contingent adjacent to the skatepark starting at noon; look for the DSA banner or red flag. Double-check this calendar event the morning of for any change of plans.

Coalition organizations hope to keep this a peaceful counter demonstration. However, in lieu of the persons involved with MayDayUSA and their connections with far-right provocateurs, the Mobilization Committee is asking attendees to take some precautions:

  • Wear a mask to protect your identity and to keep your community safe from COVID and other airborne infections.
  • Bring earplugs or other hearing protection as a precaution.
  • Check the weather forecast the morning of and dress appropriately for the conditions.
  • Do not attend alone and have a buddy or small group, and never let anyone wander alone. Also have an agreed-on check-in time with someone not attending.
  • Continuously observe your surroundings and orientate yourself. Decide ahead of time where you and your friends or family will meet in the event of a dispersal order or emergency.
  • A police liaison will be on hand, so there is no reason to talk to police.
  • If you intend to be there all afternoon/evening, bring snacks and water.
  • Remember, we keep each other safe.
