South King County Worker & Tenant Listening Campaign ?

Join your DSA comrades as we knock doors to build power and solidarity with workers and tenants in South King County (SKC).

We meet at 11 a.m. at the Kent Public Library every other Saturday. After a brief training, finding a door knocking buddy, and stocking up on snacks, we head out to different neighborhoods in SKC. We wrap up between 2-2:30 p.m. and will have food, drink, and comradely camaraderie afterward!

What is a listening campaign? Getting out and talking to our neighbors! Seeking out and actively listening to people’s stories is the lifeblood of building true solidarity. Engaging in conversations about the issues people face is dialogical: folks at the door explore issues confronting them in their daily life, and we begin to understand shared concerns by articulating some of our own. Importantly, at the doors we will not attempt to get our SKC neighbors to sign onto an already fully formulated project (mobilize), but instead invite them into the process of building something together. Our aims are threefold: 1) to understand the issues and oppressions that impact folks, 2) build the will to change these things for the betterment of people’s lives, and 3) build trust and community between previously disconnected SKC neighbors and workers, of which we are a part.

Why in South King County? Thousands of low-wage warehouse, manufacturing, and service workers drive the economy benefiting multinational corporations, and produce ⅛ of the state’s GDP. Meanwhile, wages remain low while the rents are some of the most rapidly increasing in the county. There is a richly diverse and varied demographic in this area, but currently, the working class is plagued by divisions along race, gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexuality and ability.

For what purpose? It is our goal to build a class-for-itself, and a working class that has democratic control over its own culture, institutions, and workplaces. In essence, we are interested in producing a new working class formation within South King County that fights, despite its differences, for the interests of the class and for the humanity of all.
