Tax Amazon for Green New Homes Committee Emergency Meeting

Since January, the Tax Amazon coalition has been fighting for Seattle to pass a tax on the 800 richest corporations to provide immediate financial aid to the 100,000 Seattleites most in need and to fund the construction of union-built green housing and home retrofitting. On Thursday though, three Democrat Seattle City Councilmembers shelved the bill the Tax Amazon coalition has been fighting for. The Council’s decision is a wake-up call that we need to ramp up pressure on them by preparing to take this matter directly to the voters — and we need all SDSA members’ help to go all out to collect the required signatures by July 1st.

Join the Seattle DSA Tax Amazon/Green New Homes Committee Saturday, May 9, to discuss what these recent events mean for our movement and strategize together how we move forward. Winning a big business tax for green housing is not only vital for Seattle’s working class, but is an important step toward winning a Green New Deal. This is how we build our power, get organized, and raise expectations!

We’ve sent out the ballot petition to all of our Seattle DSA members. On Saturday, after discussing this week’s events, we will text and phone bank our members to make sure they received the ballot petition and ask them to sign on and share with their family and friends. Come to our emergency committee meeting to:

• Discuss the City Council’s hypocritical shelving of the Tax Amazon legislation and strategize how we build our pressure and take matters directly to the voters.
• Prepare for upcoming events, like the action conference on May 16.
• Text and phone bank Seattle DSA members to make sure they send in their ballot petition and share it with family and friends.
• Discuss other creative ideas for collecting signatures and building this campaign
